There are many benefits to the internet, however it is also a space of many creeps and weirdos so it’s important to protect ourselves online. So here are a few do’s and don’ts for navigating the internet.
DON’T give out any personal information online to people you do not know in real life. This includes things like your address, the address of your work or what school you go to
DON’T give out your bank details outside of secure online purchases. For example, common scams include people pretended to be an employee at your bank or paypal. Your banks have your information so there will not text or call you randomly to ask for it! If you receive a call and think it may be real but you’re unsure, hang up and call your bank directly and they will be able to tell you (make sure to call your bank with their registered number you can find on google, do not call back the number that called you).
DON’T follow suspicious links sent to you even if they are from a friend. Hackers often break into people account so they can send links to people who think its coming from a friend.
DO use multi-factor authentication systems for your bank account or any other online accounts that include sensitive information, it’s annoying but will help protect your information.
DO vary your passwords, you don’t want someone to get into all your accounts just because they managed to crack one! Hackers know that people often use the same passwords so they will try it. If one of your accounts does get hacked, not only change the password of the account but also any other accounts with the same password.
DO report any abuse you receive online, especially if you are receiving threats. Often internet abusers maintain their power by posing threats to their victims, it is important to tell someone, whether it’s a friend or parent and speak to the police if you are in physical danger. Most often if they are abusing you, they are abusing others.
DO unfollow or block accounts that post information damaging to your mental wellbeing, your mental safety is also important! You have the power to choose what you look at online and if your feed is upsetting you remove it! If the posts are also encouraging harmful behaviour you can also report it which will prevent it showing on others feeds and your own.
DO enjoy the internet! It’s important to protect yourself, physically and mentally, but there is also lots of space online for entertainment and education, like this website ;). So look after yourself but don’t forget to have fun!
